Accessing the Site

Accessing the Managed Funds Service online can be done by one of two ways: (i) navigating from any part of FT.com, by entering the Markets & Funds Data fly-out menu and selecting Funds or (ii) typing www.ft.com/funds into your browser's address bar.

Overview of the Site

The FT.com Funds site provides:

  • the ability to search for funds, view detailed fund data, and compare funds and sectors
  • an education guide about managed funds
  • news and industry articles including the FT's Daily fund focus and from our weekly fund management supplement FTfm
  • a portfolio tool for tracking your funds

How to find fund information

Navigate our fund data using the Fund Directory, Quick Search, Sector Analysis and Fund Screener tools. The Fund Directory is an alphabetical guide to all fund companies in our service and the funds that they manage. The Quick Fund Search option lets you look for funds by name, a part of the name or by fund symbol. Sector Analysis lets you view all funds in a particular IMA or ABI sector. The Fund Screener option enables you to create a shortlist of funds based on the criteria you specify. Funds found using any methods can also be compared and charted using the Fund Comparison tool. You can learn more about how to use these options below.

The Fund Directory

The Fund Directory is an alphabetical list of all the fund groups that subscribe to our service. These groups are the managers of funds such as Framlington, Jupiter, Merrill Lynch etc.

The groups are organised by letter - to move between letters use the hyperlinked bar at the top of the screen. Please note that groups whose names start with numbers will appear in the Other category.

Within each letter is a list of groups whose brand name starts with that initial. Fund management groups that subscribe to the service can pay to have a logo appear, to aid navigation to their group. Premium clients of our service will have a more prominent listing at the top of the page with a logo. This is a paid-for service and FT.com does not recommend or advise which funds to buy, hold or sell.

Group and Company Home Pages

Following a group link from the Fund Directory brings you to that group's home page. Here, where provided by the fund management group, will be information about their group as well as contact details.

If the group has just one company under its brand name, then a list of all its funds will appear directly on this page, together with their prices. You can click on the name of the fund to view its tearsheet.

If the group has more than one company under its brand name, the companies will be listed here. These companies may cover separate markets and/or manage funds in different regulatory jurisdictions, for example UK funds, offshore funds or pension funds.

Where a fund management group has multiple companies under its brand, we have included a button allowing you to view at once all the funds with detailed tearsheets for that group.

Following a link to one of the companies brings you to a company home page. This is similar to the group home page, with company information and contact details, where provided. The list of all the company's funds will appear on this page, together with their prices. You can click on the name of the fund to view its tearsheet.

Quick Fund Search

The Quick Search tool allows you to search for individual funds by name, group, keyword or symbol. This tool will also allow you to search for funds that do not subscribe to our service.

If you wish to search for an individual fund, enter in the fund name, or the name of the fund management group who manages the fund; partial names can also be entered including keywords such as 'bond'.

The drop-down box to the left of the search box allows you to narrow the search to either UK or Offshore funds.

The MEXID, a symbol unique to each fund, can also be used to go directly to the fund by typing it into the search box. The MEXID is the four to six letter code which is also displayed in the fund's tearsheet. If you intend to view a particular fund on a regular basis, you may find it useful to make a note of its MEXID. The SEDOL and ISIN are also fund codes, displayed in the tearsheet, which can be used to locate a fund via the search box.

The results page lists all the funds matching your query - or if there is an exact match, the relevant fund tearsheet is directly displayed. If you search for a fund management group who is a premium client of our service, their logo will appear at the top of the results page.

Fund Screener

The Fund Screener is a powerful tool which enables you to narrow down the number of funds viewed based on the criteria you specify. There are five tabbed categories of criteria, from which you can make your selections. These 5 are outlined below:

Main

This category gives direct access to key criteria, for example allowing you to look for the UK or Offshore funds, or to restrict the search to specific fund management companies & groups. Criteria also include sector and FSA Authorised selector.

Attributes

This section enables a number of miscellaneous criteria, including primary fund, currency, fund size, domicile, legal status, dividend paying, ISA and ethical status.

Please note that data is not available for every fund in every criteria. As such, selecting 'no preference' will usually produce more results than selecting all the other possible options for particular criteria.

Charges

This allows you to filter the funds based on their charging regime. You may select from initial charge, annual charge, exit charge, minimum initial investment, minimum regular investment and minimum additional investment.

Ratings

This section allows you to set criteria based on the fund ratings of the FT, Lipper, Morningstar, Bestinvest and Standard & Poor's. Please note that not all funds are rated.

Risk & Performance

This category enables criteria to be set based on performance both absolute and relative to an index or fund sector over the period of time you specify.

Viewing Results

When you start on the Fund Screener, a result count displays the number of funds in the system. As you select criteria, this number automatically updates to reflect the funds which meet the criteria.

Once you have selected all the criteria you wish to use, the results may be viewed by clicking Get Results. This will take you to the results table. Information about the funds selected is presented in tabbed format.

The tabs may be used to navigate between the different columns in the table, whilst clicking on a column title will sort the table by that criteria. You can modify the original criteria at any time and results will update. Clicking on a fund brings up its tearsheet. Clicking on a fund company will bring up that company’s funds.

Fund Comparison

Compare funds of your choice in both tabular and graphic format using the Fund Comparison Tool. In any search result page, select funds to compare by clicking the check box to the left of each fund name. On a fund tearsheet click the “Select Fund” link to add the fund to your list of funds continue to browse for funds to compare or click the “Compare Now” to add the fund to your list of funds and go to the Fund Comparison Tool.

A maximum of 10 funds can be added to fund the fund comparison tool.

Charting Funds

The Fund Comparison tool also enables you to chart funds against each other. Select a maximum of 5 funds by clicking the check box on the left of the Side by Side Comparison table and then clicking Draw Chart. This will take you to the Comparison Charting page, with the chart drawn.

Below the chart you can modify the chart by changing the timeframe of the graph. One can also add an index and UK fund sector for comparison or remove one of the funds from the chart. Each time you modify any of these options, you must click Update Chart to redraw the chart.

Tearsheets

Funds that subscribe to the FT Managed Funds Service have detailed tearsheets available for you to view. In all three fund finding tools, these funds are indicated by this icon: Full tearsheet available

The detailed tearsheets provide a comprehensive range of information on the fund and are divided into tabbed sections. There is also a header detailing the contact details of the fund, as well as the fund manager's name and the logo of those funds who are premium clients of our service.

Chart Help

Summary page chart

This chart displays the total return of the fund over time. The time period can be selected via the dropdown menu beneath the chart and is by default one year. Total return is the percentage change in value of an investment in the fund with dividends reinvested on the ex-dividend date, gross of tax. Where the fund is priced on a bid-offer basis rather than a single price we use the bid price. The chart shows the overall growth in value of the investment rather than just the price, which would not take into account the income generated by the fund.

Time is shown on the horizontal axis of the chart and percentage return on the vertical. Scales are adjusted to fit the data.

A larger chart of total return with the facility to compare fund performance with market indices and/or UK sector averages is available on the performance analysis page and a chart of price with the facility to look up earlier prices is available on the history page.

Performance analysis page chart

This chart displays the total return of the fund over time. The time period can be selected via the dropdown menu beneath the chart and is by default one year. Using the other drop down menu you can select market indices and/or UK sector averages to compare with the performance of the fund. The comparative items are also displayed on a total return basis.

A smaller chart of total return without the facility to compare fund performance with market indices and/or UK sector averages is available on the summary page and a chart of price with the facility to look up earlier prices is available on the history page.

History page chart

This chart displays the price of the fund over time and allows you to look up the prices from a specified start and end date. Time is shown on the horizontal axis of the chart and price on the vertical. The currency of the price is indicated on the scale. Scales are adjusted to fit the data.

Charts of total return, which includes the effect of reinvesting dividends, are available on the performance analysis and summary pages.

Restrictions

While the FT Managed Funds Service is available to all users subject to local regulations, it is designed primarily with UK residents in mind. Information on funds that are not fully recognised by the FSA is restricted. For similar reasons, this section does not include the price information for US funds. This is available in the Equity section, which is always accessible through the search box in the top left corner.

Ratings

Ratings information is sourced from Ratings Agencies and is provided for information purposes only. FT.com and the Ratings Agencies do not provide recommendations or advice on funds . Fund investment values can go down as well as up, and past performance is not an indicator of future performance. You should seek professional advice before making any investment decision. FT.com is not responsible for the content of third party websites or the products/services they may offer.

FT Risk Level

Indicates the broad level of volatility of the fund. Funds with high volatility will rise and fall in value further and faster than those with low volatility. It is important to remember that this volatility may be offset by the performance of other investments.

FT Risk Profile

Shows the kind of risk presented by the fund, not just the size as measured by the Risk Level. Funds with the same Risk Profile are likely to respond to changing market conditions in similar ways and use the Risk Profile to define the peer group for comparison in the calculation of the Performance Rating. All funds with the same Risk Profile share the same Risk Level.

FT Charges

Based on the total expense ratio of the fund. This includes both the charges that the fund manager has to make explicit such as the annual management charge and those it doesn't which can make a significant difference. It does not include initial and other one off charges because in practice they are not fixed and their relative importance decreases as the length of the investment increases.

FT Match Rating

For each Risk Profile there is a model fund. The Match Rating is a measure of how closely the fund matches the behaviour of the model. The higher the match rating, the more typical its behaviour has been. Funds with low Match Ratings have exhibited less typical behaviour and therefore may have exposure to other factors. It is harder to draw accurate conclusions about the performance or behaviour of funds with low Match Ratings.

FT Performance

Based on a comparison of the performance of the fund with others that share the same Risk Profile. Performance is measured over a 180 week period and adjusted to account for differences that might come from simply making larger or smaller bets.

Standard & Poor's Fund Stars and Qualitative Fund Management Ratings

Expert Selection - Fund Management Ratings

With the growing number of investment opportunities and greater access to information, what can investors and their advisors look for to guide them in their fund selection process?

Standard & Poor's - A Trusted Source

Standard & Poor's is globally recognised as the authoritative source of independent investment analysis, ratings and opinion; and at the heart of Standard & Poor's investment skill is its experienced team of fund research analysts and investment professionals located around the world. Since the 1990 Standard & Poor's has developed a rigorous process for analysing mutual funds and today rates over 1000 unit trusts, OEICS and cross border marketed funds. It is this that has established Standard & Poor's as the leading and trusted brand that the financial community looks to for objective and insightful analysis.

It is not surprising then that Standard & Poor's pave the way to assist investors and their advisers in their fund selection process with their Fund Stars system and qualitative Fund Management Ratings.

S&P Fund Ratings

S&P Fund Stars are based on past performance and mathematics alone. However we are all too familiar with the term 'past is not a guide to future performance', so looking beyond performance track records is the next step. There are other equally if not more significant factors such as an understanding of the people, philosophy and process used to achieve fund performance historically and in the future that should be considered to create a fuller picture of a funds makeup. The Standard & Poor's Fund Management Ratings (FMR) process builds on past performance to assess the fund management quality with in-depth, interview based research, analysis and professional expertise.

It is this added information that allows for more informed decisions to be made before investing valuble savings.

Best of Breed

For an individual investor or even an experienced IFA to carry out in-depth research on the number of investment opportunities that are now available, this task would be challenging! What is needed is an independent system that filters down of a universe of funds to get a more manageable list of high-quality funds.

Thousands of advisers and investors achieve this by selecting the funds given a rating by Standard & Poor's. By assigning ratings to no more than 20% of funds in each peer group, investors and their advisors have the confidence that they are choosing quality funds that best meet the client requirements. Ben Bird, Head of Sales at Standard & Poor's comments, "What users obtain from us is independent analysis. The rating and the research reports issued with each rating, provide Standard & Poor's opinion on fund management quality and expertise. While ratings are not intended to provide financial advice, this service enables advisers to do so and demonstrate higher levels of due diligence"

A True Measure of Fund Excellence

The Standard & Poor's FMR process starts by identifying funds that demonstrate consistent performance over 3 discrete year periods.

Step 1 - Quantitative Screening of Fund Performance: Approximately 80% of funds fail this initial screening with only 20% of funds being eligible for the intensive qualitative ratings process. However not all funds will go on to achieve a rating.

Step 2 - Prior Background Audit: Standard & Poor's Fund Rating analysts carry out background research to allow them to assess and analyse details of a fund prior to the face-to-face interview. This stage enables them to identify areas of fund management that require more in-depth questioning.

Step 3 - Qualitative Face-to-Face Interview: A team of experienced and qualified S&P Fund Rating analysts perform extensive onsite face-to-face interviews with the fund managers and their team. The interviews discuss a number of factors which include: the strength of the orgainisation and any influence this may have on the individual fund such as corporate status and investment culture; the quality and experience of the fund management team; the fund management style and consistency as well as the portfolio construction and its performance.

Step 4 - Ratings Committee: The lead analysts present their findings and analysis of the fund and management group to the 'Rating Committee'. This group of senior analysts review and evaluate the qualitative assessment of the fund, manager and team and assign a Standard & Poor's Fund Management Report as appropriate. Funds are rated AAA, AA or A and according to Standard & Poor's, these funds demonstrate the ability to produce consistent above average performance while adhering to a clearly defined investment process.

For each rated fund, an in-depth report is published that includes details of the research conducted and the assessment of the fund. A typical report includes the analyst opinion behind the rating, background on the fund manager and team, details of the management style, a review of the portfolio including top 10 holdings and allocation breakdown and commentary on the funds performance. Fund Ratings and the research reports are published on Standard & Poor's funds site. For free access to ratings, research and sector commentary please go to http://www.funds-sp.com.

Definitions:

AAAThe fund demonstrates the highest standards of quality in its sector based on investment process and its management's consistency of performance compared with funds having similar objectives.
AAThe fund demonstrates very high standards of quality in its sector based on investment process and its management's consistency of performance compared with funds having similar objectives.
AThe fund demonstrates high standards of quality in its sector based on investment process and its management's consistency of performance compared with funds having similar objectives.

A fund may also be rated 'NR' or Not Rated status if the fund does not meet the requisite performance standards and/or the minimum qualifying criteria.

Step 5 - Fund Surveillance: Standard & Poor's has a dedicated fund surveillance team, which monitors each rated fund continuously. Through this activity S&P identify any significant events as they occur and assess whether they impact the rating. Funds are placed on a 'UR' or Under Review status when significant management changes occur at either a fund manager or fund management team, followed by a detailed evaluation of the changes on the qualitative appraisal.

The Standard & Poor's ratings process does not look for a particular style of fund management, rather it seeks to determine to what extent the fund follows the philosophy it professes to be managed by. This system is based upon the belief that when a fund is managed with a consistent philosophy, style and portfolio construction, over time it is more likely to produce above average relative performance in the future.

Standard & Poor's believes that using past performance data as a base and then adding the qualitative approach is more important in that is gives a better chance of making a more informed investment decision than on past performance alone.

Select a time frame

Lipper Leaders can be displayed over numerous time frames to allow closer matching of investor's criteria

Lipper Total Return

A Lipper Leader for Total Return is a fund that has provided superior total returns over the past three years when compared to a group of similar funds. Lipper Leaders for Total Return may be the best fit for investors who want the best return, without looking at risk. This measure alone may not be suitable for investors who want to avoid downside risk. For more risk-averse investors, the Total Return measure can be used with either Preservation and/or Consistent Return to make a risk-return tradeoff decision.

Lipper Consistent Return

A Lipper Leader for Consistent Return is a fund that has provided superior consistency and risk-adjusted returns when compared to a group of similar funds. Lipper Leaders for Consistent Return may be the best fit for investors who value a fund's year-to-year consistency relative to other funds in a particular peer group. Investors are cautioned that some peer groups are inherently more volatile than others, and even Lipper Leaders for Consistent Return in the most volatile groups may not be well suited to shorter-term goals or less risk-tolerant investors.

Lipper Preservation

A Lipper Leader for Preservation is a fund that has demonstrated a superior ability to preserve capital in a variety of markets when compared with its asset class - Equity, Mixed Equity, or Fixed Income funds. Choosing a Lipper Leader for Preservation may help to minimise downside risk, relative to other fund choices in the same asset class. Investors are cautioned that Equity funds have historically been more volatile than Mixed Equity or Fixed Income funds, and that even Lipper Leaders for Preservation in more volatile asset classes may not be well-suited to shorter-term goals or less risk-tolerant investors.

Lipper Expense

A Lipper Leader for Expense is a fund that has successfully managed to keep its expenses low relative to its peers and within its fee structure. Lipper Leaders for Expense may be the best fit for investors who want to minimise their total cost, and can be used in conjunction with Total Return or Consistent Return to identify funds with above-average performance and lower-than-average cost.

Morningstar Categories and Ratings

More than 15 years ago, Morningstar was the first to bring to all investors a simple idea: fund returns must be compared on a cost- and risk-adjusted basis. The Morningstar Rating provides an easy-to-use ranking of the returns of comparable funds, taking into account costs and risk.

The key ingredients of the Morningstar Rating are:

  • Morningstar Categories
  • Costs inputs
  • A risk-adjusted return calculation

Morningstar Categories

Morningstar Categories bring together funds that have similar investment policies, as reflected by their portfolio holdings. Morningstar devotes significant effort to the analysis of complete portfolios to meet this demanding objective. Stated investment objectives and fund names are not a sufficient basis for the reliable allocation of funds to categories.

In the UK, the key Morningstar Categories are:

  • UK Equity Large Cap
  • UK Equity Mid Cap
  • UK Equity Small Cap
  • Europe ex UK Equity
  • Europe ex UK Small Cap Equity
  • Europe Large Cap Equity
  • Europe Small Cap Equity
  • Euroland Large Cap Equity
  • North America Equity
  • North America Small Cap Equity
  • Asia Equity
  • Asia ex-Japan equity
  • Japan Equity
  • Japan Small Cap Equity
  • Global Equity
  • World ex UK Equity
  • Global Emerging Markets Equity
  • Latin America Equity
  • TMT Sector Equity
  • Other Sectors Equity
  • Sterling Balanced
  • Sterling Bond
  • Sterling Government Bond
  • Sterling High Yield Bond
  • Sterling Global Bond
  • Sterling Short Bond
  • Sterling Money Market
  • Emerging Market Bond

Costs

All annual expenses incurred by a fund are already deducted from the raw performance figures. Additionally, the Morningstar Rating systematically takes initial charges into account. Any equity or balanced fund will receive a 5% charge, unless of course the maximum charge applicable is lower, in which that maximum initial charge is applied in the calculation. For bond funds, the charge is 3% unless the maximum initial charge happens to be lower. There is a trade-off between initial charges and annual charges, and Morningstar endeavours to assess all funds on a level playing field over the relevant measurement period.

Risk-Adjusted Returns

For all rated funds, we use 3 years of return data. Whilst we are well aware that the past volatility of those returns is not a perfect description of fund risk (hence our focus on complete portfolio holdings), we are making the best possible use of the available data. Our formulation reflects the fact that, the more consistent the returns through time, the better.

The Morningstar Stars

Once these calculations have been performed, funds can be ranked in their categories. The stars are allocated as follows:

Top10%
Next22.5%
Middle35%
Next22.5%
Bottom10%

These calculations are performed every month and therefore can fluctuate, much like the relative performance of any given fund can fluctuate.

Should you have any questions about Morningstar or the Morningstar Categories and Morningstar Rating, please contact us at dataquestions.uk@morningstar.com.

Bestinvest Fund

Rating based on a mixture of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Before a fund is rated, the Bestinvest research team conduct a face to face interview with the fund manager.Five Star - Exceptional - the manager is amongst the best of his peers and has a long track record of consistent outperformance. Four Star - Very High Quality - the manager is very talented and the fund a strong recommendation. Three Star - High Quality - the fund is expected to be in the top quartile over periods of three years or more. Two Star - Moderate - the fund is expected to perform broadly inline with its benchmark or insufficient confidence in the manager to justify a higher rating. One Star - Poor - the fund is expected to underperform.

Bestinvest Fund Manager MRI

The Bestinvest MRI measures the likelihood that a fund manager is adding value through their decisions. MRIs above 90% show a high degree of confidence in a manager's abilities. Conversely MRIs of below 10% suggest the manager could likely have done better by guessing. The MRI is calculated using data over a manager's entire career in a given sector and incorporates manager moves.
